Disappointed by E3? Wait a Month

Posted July 20th, 2008 by Brianemone

leipzigAt least two of the big players at E3 commented about announcements not made at E3 and games that were not on show. There has been no comment from Microsoft about the lack of Alan Wake at E3 but both Sony and EA are making hints that their Leipzig lineups contain something that a lot of people went away wanting after E3, new stuff.

Since an interview with Todd Sitrin in March, which mentioned that there were two new sports IP’s in the works at EA, there has been a lot of talk about what they could be and when they will show their faces. Facebreaker is almost upon us and so it is that we start looking to the future and what we will be playing next.

In my time with Peter Moore we talked about these games and when we might be finding out what they will be. While talking about the importance of globalisation and the timing of the announcements of these new titles he said the following.

You’ll hear some interesting announcements come Leipzig

Fairly blunt and to the point. The full interview will be in one of the next ButtonMasher Podcasts.

The second bits of information came from Sony. At the PAL specific press briefing David Reeves said that they had about 12 announcements to make at Leipzig, far more than what made its way out at E3.

Some print media were given a private preview screening of Heavy Rain at E3. The developers (Quantic Dream) were also present at the Sony briefing and while they weren’t able to talk about Heavy Rain at E3 outside of the private screening they did hint at more open access to information about the game at GC.

I really enjoyed E3 for the amount of games that were on show and the willingness of the developers to talk about their games. The GC’s last show in Leipzig however promises to be action packed.

I thought as much, E3 is way to close to leipzig.

Leipzig has been where good announcements have been shown as of late.

i also wonder if Sony will have another Playstation Premiere Event before it, like last year.

The way I see it is… E3 is for announcements concerning the US market and projects by Sony’s US developers and games suited for US audiences like shooters. Leipzig will focus on stuff for Europe and their European developers such as those making Heavy Rain and I’ll bet Killzone 2 will show up as well… And the Tokyo Games Show is for their Japanese developers, announcements and games for Japanese audiences such as RPGs… makes sense…

  5. Cruiz Dwyer says:

I agree with Johnno… i think Sony are just releasing info at gaming conventions based on the developing bodies association with the region.

It’s a shame we won’t be able to have anyone at Leipzig. Perhaps we should start charging people a dollar to view the main page. We’d make at least 10$ a week.

Microsoft had two big announcements @ E3 this year. The whole new dash and the news of FFXIII coming to 360.
It’s a good plan to space the big announcements out a little – they don’t want any new announcement to overshadow their E3 news, and saving any other announcements (Alan Wake, Bungie’s new project, etc) they make sure they won’t be overlooked.

  8. Yert says:

Word on the street is that MS is holding off its news on Halo, Alan Wake, and one more thing off until around TGS (October).
