A German Tech site has quoted David Reeves from Leipzig as having stated that Mirror’s Edge would be a timed exclusive for the PS3, this came out of the blue for many people looking forward to the game and especially the Xbox 360/PC owners.
The PS3 will be continuously supplied with exclusive games: “We are continuously, month after month publish new titles that bring something unique and different target groups. In a month, it is Gran Turismo, in the next SingStar, as well as Third-Party Title as mirrors Edge by Electronic Arts are part of this strategy. “ According to Reeves Mirrors Edge will initially exclusively for the PS3 this year. PC and Xbox 360 versions would follow much later.
EA however have declined this statement by the SCEE President with the following…..
Mirror’s Edge will be shipping this winter on PS3, XBOX360 and PC. Mirror’s Edge will not be a timed exclusive for PS3.
Pretty clear. Now back to waiting impatiently for it’s release

I don’t care, I just want to play it dammit!
Yet another major LIE from Sony about the Playstation 3.
Xbox 360 games always end up better, so I will get the Xbox 360 version of Mirror’s Edge.
PS3 is the lead platform on this game, so PS3 will be the best version, like for all the recent games like GTA4 (no pop in unlike 360). and SC4
Kim Naroz, Sony did not lie. A bunch of people at GC misquoted Reeves, assumed ME was timed exclusive, and ran with it. And you do realize that all media showings of Mirrors Edge have been the PS3 version which has been running with zero problems? It’s the lead platform. And last time I checked, Devil May Cry 4, Burnout Paradise, Madden 09, and Call of Duty 4 run no differently from the 360 counterparts.
If you took off your blinders and quit being a fanboy, you’d know that Microsoft really aren’t any better when it comes to being truthful.
@kim
Im sorry but the ps3 version is the lead platform, I dont know what your trying to prove..
PS3 may be the “lead platform,” but Xbox 360 has already done all the “proving” that needs to be done.
Kim was simply pointing out the fact that virtually every multi-platform game released on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 has been better on the Xbox 360…often by a wide margin.
For example, Orange Box is one of my favorites, and it was Game of the Year on Xbox 360 with ratings of 95%, but the Playstation 3 version wasn’t nearly as good; it had ratings of only 80%.
Even games like Fight Night Round 3 and Ridge Racer which had the PS3 as the “lead development platform” ended up noticably better on the Xbox 360.
For example, Ridge Racer has waves of water under the bridges, and they look great. The waves of water move in the Xbox 360 version, but in the Playstation 3 version the waves of water are always “paused” and never move because the PS3 doesn’t have the processing power for that…even though the PS3 was the “lead platform.”
Soul Caliber 4 is a new game with the Playstation 3 as the Lead Platform.
BUT
Xbox 360 version of Soul Caliber 4 is quite a bit better in several ways.
(1) Xbox 360 version of Soul Caliber 4 has resolution that is 40% higher.
Xbox 360 Soul Caliber 4 runs at 1365×960p compared to only 1280×720p for the Playstation 3. This is the reason why the Xbox 360 version doesn’t have the jagged lines that the PS3 version does
(2) Xbox 360 version has RUMBLES in the controller, but the Playstation 3 version of Soul Caliber does NOT have RUMBLE in the controller…not even if you have the Dual Shock 3 controller that was obviously a waste of $60 since games like Soul Caliber 4 don’t support it.
(3) Xbox 360 version of Soul Caliber 4 has Achievements, but the Playstation 3 version does not support Trophies.
(4) Xbox 360 version of Soul Caliber 4 has Custom In-Game Background Music, but the PS3 version does not.
(5) Xbox 360 even has an awesome custom Joystick with Soul Caliber characters so that you can play the game with perfection!
……No doubt about it, Soul Caliber 4 is the latest game with the Playstation 3 as the “Lead Platform” where the Xbox 360 version ends up being the superior overall version in every area from Graphics to Gameplay Features to Replay Value.
Wow!
Seth kicks some butt!!!
I gotta agree that Soul Caliber 4 is better on the Xbox 360. I have a friend with a 1080p HDTV set, and the Xbox 360 upconverts all of the games to 1080p, and PS3 doesn’t. No doubt about it, the Xbox 360 version of SC4 looks better.
I only have a 720p HDTV set, and I was told the reason why the Xbox 360 version still looks better than the one on the PS3 that my friend brought over my house is because the Xbox 360 can also “downconvert” the graphics so that higher resolution can be taken advantage of, even if your HDTV set doesn’t go that high.
So I guess what I’m trying to say is that I agree Soul Caliber 4 is a lot better on Xbox 360. Having the achievements adds a lot of extra fun right there. Not having rumble controls in the PS3 makes it feel empty.
Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is also one of the newer games that is quite a bit better on the Xbox 360. Some of the parts of Rainbow Six Vegas 2 literally look like the Xbox 360 version is a high-end PC graphics card, while the Playstation 3 version looks like a low-end PC graphics card.
Grand Theft Auto 4 is a game that runs at higher resolution on Xbox 360. It runs at 720p on Xbox 360, but only 640p on Playstation 3.
Reasons like this are why the Xbox 360 wins the graphics comparisons on websites like Eurogamer, Gamespot, and many others.
@Jack Brown:
Fight Night Round 3 “planned” PS3 as the lead platform, in reality the PS3 project was turned into scrap; it was developed solely for X360 and later ported to PS3 by EA Canada (Burnaby I believe, they’re currently making FNR4).
I don’t remember any PS3/360 multiplatform Ridge Racer. I thought RR7 was PS3 exclusive and RR6 was 360 exclusive. I haven’t played either, are they the same game?
Anyway, it’s pretty funny how only one German tech site has said ME being timed exclusive and people totally thought David Reeves said that.
If he actually did, wouldn’t dozens of magazines have published it on their PS3 section?
Two things:
1) PS3 does upscale to 1080P if you unselect 720P/1080i from video options, and the results of upscaling are clearly there. Some demos cannot be upscaled this way but I run ALL my PS3 and X360 games upscaled to 1080P.
2) Native resolution =/= graphical superiority. Halo 3 has native resolution of 640P, COD4 has 600P (both consoles according to google). I don’t think either game falls under “crap graphics.”
I only have Soul Calibur IV on 360 so I can’t comment on how bad PS3 version looks, but from the screenshots it looked good enough to me?
P.S. Soul Calibur is spelled the way I spelled it, calibUr not calibEr
I have both system and prefer the slicker in-game XMB, the reliability and the quieter running sound on my PS3. All of the truly big third-party games have been just as fun on my PS3 as they have on my 360, though I do prefer to purchase the PS3 version due to my dislike of the 360s controller and having to pay for basic services like online multiplayer.
All these games you folks mentioned are nearly years old now. I read this article because I’m interested in Mirror’s Edge, not Ridge Racer, Fight Night, Rainbow Six Vegas or even SC4. I can see my PS3 becoming my primary system of choice with so many stellar titles coming forth that my 360 simply cannot compete with so why would I go and mess my game up by swapping controllers for 200 extra pixels ;)
Seth Smith spouting some typical Microsoft misinformation I see there. Outright lying infact.
Depi:
Ridge Racer 6 on the Xbox 360 and Ridge Racer 7 on the Playstation 3 are 99.9% the same.
The only differences are that the Xbox 360 version has better graphics, Achievements, and Rumble.
Well, lol, now that I think about it that does sound like there are some differences.
It’s the exact same situation that happened with Full Auto on the Xbox and Full Auto 2 on the Playstation 3…same game, different name.
The stages/levels/courses/cars that are in Ridge Racer appear on both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 versions of the game.
Technically, Jack Brown is right. Ridge Racer 6 looks great with those waves moving in the Xbox 360 version with all of the light shining on them and the area around them. I played Ridge Racer 6 for a year, and then when Ridge Racer 7 comes out I ended up playing the exact same stage with the exact same car, driving on the exact same courses.
The only difference was that the Playstation 3 version had graphics that weren’t as good–such as the waves not moving. I read about this before on other websites. Interviews with Namco developers made it clear that even though the PS3 version was released later, the PS3 version was the lead platform, because Namco originally thought the PS3 would launch in fall of 2005, just like the Xbox 360.
Even with all that extra development time the PS3 version still wasn’t as good as the Xbox 360 version. The Namco developers actually claimed that the PS3 version “wasn’t missing anything” in the area of graphics, because they said their original plan did not call for the waves too move. That sounds like PR nonsense to me though.
Namco just kept on saying they were impressed with the Xbox 360 power and that’s why they included unplanned extra features with the Xbox 360 version.
I hope that helps you out though.
Depi:
One other thing.
Halo 3 is different than Call of Duty 4 in one fundamental way in terms of resolution.
Although Halo 3 displays 640p and COD4 displays 600p, Halo 3 uses a dual-frame buffer, which causes the display of far more pixels. This is the reason why Halo 3 has such amazingly smooth lighting with beautiful textures running at 60 frames per second. COD4 also runs at 60 frames per second, but it doesn’t have lighting nearly as smooth as Halo 3 does.
Metal Gear Solid 4 runs at only 30 frames per second, and although 720p is listed as the resolution, it does not run at the traditional 1280×720p; it only runs at 1024×720p, which is considerably lower in terms of the number of pixels displayed on screen.
Also, I have noticed that quite a few PS3 games and Xbox 360 games list 1080p on the back of the box, even though the “NATIVE” resolution is actually only 720p on the PS3 and 720p/1080i on the Xbox 360.
But, the fact is that the Xbox 360 had an actual chip in the hardware dedicated to the upconversion/downconversion of resolution. In Soul Calibur 4 it really does make a difference, because the PS3 has some noticable jagged lines that are easily seen if you have a big TV or sit close to the screen.
PS3 doesn’t have an actual chip in the hardware dedicated to resolution upconversion. This is the reason why early PS3 games had the problem of incompatibility with CRT and 1080i Plasma HDTV sets. Those games had the PS3 outputing 720p (but not 1080i) resolution, and the HDTV did not have the ability to upconvert the signal to 1080i, and neither did the PS3. So, the HDTV downconverted it to only 480p, which really sucked because it meant you were seeing an HD game on an HDTV, but it wasn’t being seen in HD.
When you set your PS3 to output 1080p, it just means the image is Magnified, but not truly Upconverted. If you had a CRT or Plasma HDTV set with 1080i resolution, you would see what a major problem the PS3 still has with games that don’t include a Native 1080i or 1080p mode.
A friend of mine has a PS3 who can only play the small number of games that are Natively 1080p (because it can be downscaled to 1080i), and the games that also include a 1080i compatibility mode.
Seriously, it’s funny the way we seem to be caring about this so much. This is only game stuff.
Let’s just be glad that the Xbox 360 will get the game the same time as PS3 and PC.
History has proven that the Xbox 360 version will probably be at least as good as the Playstation 3 version, if not better.
There is no need for people to start ripping on each other, just be glad.
I remember when Playstation 3 owners use to say that Square Enix was their favorite company, because Final Fantasy 13 was announced as a Playstation 3 exclusive game.
On the other hand, Xbox 360 owners would say that they liked Square Enix because games like Infinite Undiscovery and Star Ocean 4 would be exclusive to the Xbox 360.
Then Final Fantasy 13 was announced for the Xbox 360, and suddenly it was obvious that the Xbox 360 was the system that you NEEDED to own if you like games from Square Enix, since Infinite Undiscover and Star Ocean 4 were still exclusive to the Xbox 360, and even The Last Remnant was a timed-exclusive for Xbox 360.
When that happened the Sony Playstation 3 fans said that Square Enix was the company they hated most, and they sold their Playstation 3 systems on eBay.
Gimme a break people, you are taking this way to personally!
Hey Kris
Soul Calibur 4 is less than a month old, and it is better on Xbox 360.
Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and Grand Theft Auto 4 are also new games that are part of this years lineup.
It doesn’t really matter to me “when” stuff is released, but I think it has been proven that Xbox 360 had a performance advantage in the beginning, and that advantage still exists…as new games like Soul Calibur 4 and Grand Theft Auto 4 and Rainbow Six Vegas 2 show.
I like how every not only turned this into a flame war, but also are citing old games/information/lies. Well, I might as well jump in.
Ridge Racer? Really, Ridge Racer? Wasn’t that a launch title for the PS3, or close enough? A lot has happened in 2 years for developers, like the ability to have a lot of experience in making PS3 games. And what’s this “360 has rumble and achievements” talk? The PS3 has adopted both of those things, albeit not heavily supported. But we’re talking about the games, not gamerscore.
Let’s look at some games, shall we?
1. GTA4 – In comparisons that I’ve seen and read, I’ve gotten mixed reviews on the graphics; Some prefer the 360, some love the PS3. So it’s a draw; they both look great, although I do prefer the PS3’s graphics. And they both play fine, both on- and offline, but the PS3 has a tiny edge, with less scenery pop-ins, due to the install. But the 360, like all shooters, feels more natural in controlling because of the triggers.
2. DMC4 – A tad old, but still relevant. It seems to play a lot better on the PS3, according to reviews that I’ve read (note: I’ve only played the PS3 version), and I agree. Along with load times, and there’s a small graphical difference in the PS3 version of DMC4.
Those are just 2 games that play better/equally to the 360 versions. Because of the advanced programming necessary to make a PS3 game, developers get lazy/fed up when porting the game over, making for a bad game on the PS3 side. I mean, they announced a Bioshock port in March, slated for release in November. But that is changing, with programmers now able to get a better feel for the PS3. Look at the exclusives: R&C: Future, MGS4, Resistance and Uncharted all are great, fluid, flawless games.
Sure, the 360 has better games right now, but it’s limited power and disc storage will hinder it in the future, when an exclusive PS3 game will need that extra space and processing power. Killzone 2 runs off of 4.5/6 Cells, and will most likely fill up the disc.
To create an an analogy, the PS3 is an NFL running back, fresh out of a Heisman trophy college season. He’s powerful, big and fast. He got drafted by a team with the 360; an above average sized running back who’s been put in a system utilizing his quickness. But when the PS3 is put into that same system, he doesn’t preform up to the 360 because the coaches aren’t use to his play style. But after the season, they realize that they can still use him, but they have to make plays that utilize his strengths. And each year, developers will be adding more plays to the PS3’s playbook, and realize that he is as good as the 360 is.
Whoa there, Eric.
1. GTA is equal on PS3 and 360 – agreed.
It’s worth pointing out, however, that the pop-in is an issue that people get based on their specific DVD drives – and is not an issue that all 360 users get.
Also, 360 users get GTA DLC soon. PS3 owners don’t.
2. DMC is NOT better on PS3. They are much the same although the PS3 version loads slightly faster (1-3 secs) then the 360, but you have to sit through the install at the start.
—–
You can’t say, “the PS3 will be better in the future”. It just doesn’t wash. If you buy a 360 to get the best experience now, and you can always sell it and buy a PS3 if the PS3’s mystical ‘awesome’ future arrives.
—–
Anyway – why are you not all posting in the forums so I can argue with you.
Hmm, using an online comparison from 06 to prove that there were favorable differences to the 360 with the RR games? Classic. RR7 looked better, period. There were resolution differences with RR7 running at full 1920×1080 while RR6 ran at 1440×810. No such nonsense about PS3 being the lead platform from the developers was mentioned.
For the record, neither version of SCIV has any AA and despite rendering resolution differences, you’d be hard pressed to find any significant differences. Likewise for DMC4 (cutscenes on the PS3 ran at 60fps vs 30fps on 360 and it has a filter that the 360 game was missing).
