There has been a fair amount of “Halo 4” rumour mongering going on over the last week. Consider this a recap. The October issue of the Official Xbox Magazine started things off with a rumour that Gearbox is developing Halo 4 as a launch title for the next Xbox (known on the Internet as the Xbox 720). In February of this year Randy Pitchford, big boss of Gearbox Software put an interesting snippet in a job advert.
“I’ve started a new project. It’s big. It’s, like, look-at-our-line-up-and-imagine-something-even-bigger kind of big. I’m Directing it myself. I can’t mention it publicly yet. When you find out what this is, you’ll likely agree that I can’t oversell this one.”
Gearbox have brought Halo CE to PC, have done the Brothers in Arms series, and is currently working on Borderlands.
Today, Microsoft confirmed that Corrine Yu has been hired as part of the internal Halo team at Microsoft. Corrine was/is Director of Technology at Gearbox (game engine stuff). Apparently it was a package deal whereby her husband, Kenneth Scott will also join Microsoft Game Studios as an art director (hope he does better than Enemy Territory:Quake Wars).
Rumour has it that Yu has been hired to work on the Peter Jackson Halo project. Supposedly this game has reaching the end of its “planning stages” and will be getting kicked into gear soon (remember that job advert?).
So, most of the games Yu has worked on lately have been run on Unreal Engine 3, with Borderlands using a heavily modded version thereof. Will the next Halo be an Unreal Engine game? I dont know if the Chief can handle that much brown.
As always I shall continue to keep you updated on all things Halo.
