A classification for Dead Space has appeared on the Australian OLFC website, as expected it has been given the highest rating possible for a game, MA15+, what was not expected however is one of the finer details indicating that the game has been submitted twice.
As you can see from the screen grab of the OLFC website the version of the game given the classification is listed as “revised” which means the version of the game receiving the final classification is altered in some way from the original media that was submitted.
The timing is also interesting as just yesterday I saw people talking about the game being banned in Germany, China and Japan. The only recent title that I can think of that has been revised for reasons other than sexual/drug content is Payback: Soldier of Fortune, which has the dismemberment removed, remove dismemberment from Dead Space and you are left with a rather empty shell of a game, my fears are somewhat alleviated by the fact that Ninja Gaiden 2 went through the classification process unscathed.
Where things get a little strange is a classification for Dead Space listed from back in April, I don’t know what is happening there but it was far too early for the game to have been submitted at that point. As it is the weekend we will need to wait until tomorrow to find out what is really happening and whether or not NZ will suffer from the ease of distributing the same product in both countries.
UPDATE: I’ve been in contact with EA and they have some good news. The fact that the game is showing as revised is correct but the reason is fairly innocent. As mentioned the game was initially classified in April but with the game being in development longer and having more content added it needed to be reclassified to account for the new additions. The good news is that the game is going to be released in its full, and unedited state in both New Zealand and Australia.

But can the EA rep be trusted?
It’s without question that lying and telling us the Aussie version is unedited would be in their best interests. They don’t want gamers to avoid purchasing this game because it’s not the same version that the rest of the world gets. Honestly, just because EA says it aint so that doesn’t put my mind as ease too much.
Would EA risk fabricating a story like that?
Should i be worried?
