At this time of year, Karaoke games are always the ‘in’ thing. As people celebrate and wind down for the year, inhibitions are thrown out the window as alcohol induces binges have people believing they have all of a sudden been blessed with the ability to hold a tune.

These days you no longer need the alcohol or public humiliation. Thanks to this Sony cash cow, all you need is a PS3 and a set of microphones and you are on your way to dreams of grandeur (or possibly a painful NZ Idol audition!)

Singstar Vol. 3 is a pretty sweet package – a good mixture of songs, presentation that is smooth and appealing; and excellent online integration. But when you look at the bigger picture, Singstar Vol. 3 actually lacks any real innovation or new features. Singstar Vol. 3 is likely to appeal to the Singstar rookie. They have just picked up their new PS3 in time for Christmas, like to sing the odd song or two but haven’t really played any of the Singstar games since their PS2 packed it in earlier in the year.

Most of you will be pretty familiar with how the game works so I will skip through all of that and get straight to the point. The standard game modes return – Sing Solo, Duet, Practice and Pass the Mic. If you happen to have a Playstation Eye or Eye Toy, you can connect it to your PS3 and place it somewhere near the screen where it will proceed to take random and embarrassing snapshots and clips for your viewing pleasure post song. These can be saved to your PS3 and even uploaded to My Singstar Online where other can see. The Singstore is once again accessible with hundreds of songs available to download for a small fee.

At the end of the day it is probably more cost effective for the experienced Singstar gamer to purchase tracks they actually want to sing, from the wide variety available in the Singstore. If you are new to the Singstar series or don’t have access to the internet then this will still be a worthwhile purchase, as long as you enjoy the following 30 songs:
