If you were watching the news on TV a week or two ago you might have noticed an article about how Telecom was introducing a new plan that offered unlimited data and that it was taking preparatory steps to ensure that it wouldn’t bite them in the ass when people start going banana’s with the torrents. Part of this is to cache data locally so it doesn’t have to travel through the international gateway more than the first time it is downloaded. Yesterday Tyepo in the forums pointed out that his speeds for downloads from the Xbox Live Marketplace have increased as of yesterday to something previously impossible. I tested it today with a 176 MB file and what would have previously taken an hour was completely downloaded in less than ten minutes.
I have contacted telecom for a comment on this but it seems to be the only logical explanation, the best part of this news is that the same should hold true with the other consoles as well and the Playstation network downloads will also be motoring along at a healthy click as well.

My little test…
Rolleston, Christchurch. Wireless connection to Netgear DG834G. Orcon@Home Gold (FS down/128 up)
Xbox 360.
Overlord 2 Demo 761.34MB
Start Wed 8th July 8.23am – Finish Wed 8th July 9.07am.
44 minutes for 761.34MB.
Not bad I guess….
Not bad at all, ive always noticed that xbox live takes for ever with my xnet full speed up and down. Usually get 1000kb/s with rapidshare so I was always like wtf with xbox live. Guess ill see what its like when I download BF 1943.
Anyways props for coming from my home town of Rolly (town of the future!), live in chch now btw – Rolleston must have better broadband access than it did a few years ago, considering the speed ya seem to be getting off live.
Well after downloading bf1943 Im impressed. It was a 559 MB download, which took around 30 – 40 mins, forgot to time it though sry. This is a big difference from the several hours it would usually take not so long ago, in those days I usually had to download over night lol.
Seems the same to me… infact it is worse for me over the last week…. constant dropouts from live and internet and downloads not finishing, telstra say its my modem but I dont think thats true, been fine untill last week.
That sounds like an internet connection issue more than anything.
