One of the things that Rock Band gamers hold over the fans of the Guitar Hero series is the fact that all the songs from RB1 can be downloaded from the disc and work with RB2 and that the DLC is universal. Well, now that the Guitar Hero series has more than just the guitar it looks like the same sort of feature will be coming just in time for Guitar Hero 5.
Tim Riley, head of music licensing at Activision, had this to say about importing songs
“It’s something we’ve wanted to do for a while now. They are separate licenses, so we need to go back and re-license previous content. So, songs from World Tour, songs from the download space, songs from Smash Hits that will technically work in Guitar Hero 5 and Band Hero had to be renegotiated…We didn’t want to do it for a couple songs. We wanted to do it for a couple hundred songs. So we have a lot cleared and we’re in the process of clearing a lot more.”
So it seems that not only did Mr Riley confirm the future possibility of downloading titles, but it seems that games have previously been licensed for one title only, fully explaining why we haven’t seen games cross over from title to title previously. Read more if IGNs hands-on preview here.
