There has been a flurry of excellent, high class and entertaining games flooding the Xbox Live Marketplace recently. Arriving with little or none of the fanfare that some of the recent titles have enjoyed is The Warriors: Street Brawl. No it’s not a rugby league game and no, it’s not a ‘Jake the Mus’ game, well maybe a little.
Based on the 1979 movie Street Brawl is a side-scrolling beat-em up fighter. The game begins with your gang being framed for a shooting, and therefore you have to fight your way through scores of other gangs to get back to your turf. Its split up into seven levels, each divided into three stages. Graphically he game looks quite impressive, with good 3D character animations and detailed and varied environments. But unfortunately there aren’t a lot more redeeming features.
The game play feels extremely repetitive and dated. Scroll right, defeat ‘X’ amount of goons, scroll right to the next batch of goons, and repeat. You have very basic fighting controls, grab, kick and punch. String combo’s of these together to load a ‘rage meter’, which increases damage when maxed. A nice little counter shoot button when knocked down and a ‘special’ jumping kick move. Plus a block button, which is crucial once hoards of enemies pounce at once.I’m hesitant to say the game play is too hard, probably more too frustrating than hard and unfortunately, not that much fun to play.
The ability to play multiplayer will be a fantastic addition for many. Up to four players can play locally through either the arcade story mode or a VS mode. The same is also available over Xbox Live. Admittedly I had issues even finding games to join, might pay to find some regular friends to play with to get your moneys worth.
The Warriors: Street Brawl wont be the game for everyone. It’s a basic side-scrolling fighter. It doesn’t offer a lot of incentive to go back and play again. Fans of classic arcade games like this will possibly love this title. Definitely try the demo before you buy. Available now for 800 points.
