What was wrong with the Wii when it came out was almost universally accepted as it’s lack of depth, there were fun times to be had for sure, but not much to keep you going past that initial buzz. The Motion Plus add on increased the sensitivity, but the lag and jumpiness still existed, right away when we got the Move controller in our hands it was obvious that something was different with this controller. Past the break are some impressions and some super intense promo shots from Sony, all images at max size for added interactivity.

Accuracy was the key difference, a product which still has limited software as it is all still in development, but already shows such improvement over it’s most similar competitor. The movement is fluid and precise, even when visibility is obscured by some ones large ass, it still tracks movement, albeit with a reduction in axis monitored. Speed is also very precise, you are even required by some games to put in some real effort into the speed.

Sony NZ didn’t have the secondary unit available to try out, but had plenty of the remotes and none of the mini games ready to play at the time required its use. Shooting a bow and arrow was performed by doing a Kevin Butler. We played a gladiator type mini game which involved using one controller as the shield and the other as the sword/mace/death-bringer. With the impressive accuracy and the amount of buttons/triggers available when using the controllers in combination there are a lot of options for combinations and interesting gameplay action, like waggle plus some.

While we were very impressed with the accuracy, the real test will be what Sony do with this new peripheral. The eye toy never really appealed outside of its family friendlyness, and I don’t think the PSEye has done much to improve on this. Sony have the chance to improve on what Nintendo started, it might be something spectacular, or it might be just another under utilised piece of equipment. Time will tell.

Buttonmasher has arrived!
We’ll be here all week in sunny Los Angeles, trying to sort out exactly where the hell the game industry is going. 3-D? Motion? A Kevin Butler theocracy? Whichever it is, we’ll be on-hand to deliver the latest reports and reviews.
Stay tuned!
