Total Annihilation Successor to be Kickstarted

Sunday, August 19th, 2012

Cavedog’s Total Annihilation is one of the best-loved real time strategy games of all time, and despite poorly thought-out unit balance, dodgy net code and a complete lack of official support for more than a decade, it’s still a popular multiplayer title fifteen years after its release.

Supreme Commander, the spiritual successor developed by Chris Taylor’s Gas Powered Games, captured some of the original game’s appeal, but its sequel, Supreme Commander 2, lacked the epic scale of TA and SupCom.  Planetary Annihilation looks set to be a spiritualer successor; an unashamed homage to the epic scale of the original, but taken to an ambitious new level.  Uber Entertainment (developers of Monday Night Combat) are set to develop, with TA and SupCom development vet Jon Mavor heading up the project.

Battles will take place across entire planetary systems, with moonbases, asteroids used as kinetic impactors capable of glassing entire planets, and also robots that blow each other up. The Kickstarter for the project looks to be doing well; already halfway to its $900,000 goal after only four days.  Check out the trailer after the break or on the Kickstarter page.  If you liked Total Annihilation, you will love what’s planned for Planetary Annihilation.

Crysis 2 (Xbox 360)

Time for a mid-winter B3 and to avoid me becoming too dis-organised I have started numbering them.  So here is the 6th quick verdict on a sub-$25 game picked up as a  bargain bin purchase. Crysis 2 was a solid release in 2011, but does it still offer value for money if picked up cheap in 2012?

Final Fantasy VII Re-release

Thursday, July 5th, 2012

So while the world prays for a Final Fantasy VII remake, Square Enix announces a PC version available for digital download.

No new textures. No new character models. No HD.

Instead Square Enix boasts 36 Achievements, a Character Booster (basically like a game shark), and Cloud Saves.

I don’t know how confident Square feels with this and I don’t know who they are trying to please. With its quite frankly dated graphics it’s tough to recommend this even to newcomers. As much as I love FFVII…

Finally, Meet The Pyro (and Source Filmmaker)

Wednesday, June 27th, 2012

I always wondered how the “Meet The” series promoting Team Fortress 2 would tackle the Pyro, a character that doesn’t talk and therefore would be breaking continuity to narrate his own video. It’s as cleverly done as all the others, even if it’s only in service of one real gag. Of course, why are Valve using resources to promote a game that’s how old at this point? Well, it’s also promoting an upcoming product called Source Filmmaker, which has its own serious video to explain it all. Pretty cool looking stuff.

Carrier Command dated for September

Thursday, May 31st, 2012

When I was a boy I played games on my Amiga, one of them was Carrier Command combining strategy, action, simulation and above all imagination. Many games of that era stay in our minds, but Carrier Command is something that held a special place and to see it getting this kind of revision really is exciting.Roll on September 27th!

You Have Less Than 40 Hours to Fund Republique

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

While the Kickstarter campaigns mentioned here have more or less been successful, Republique is in danger of failing with less than 40 hours to raise $500,000. They’re currently at $355,333. The catch of Kickstarter is that if the pledged goal isn’t met within the time frame the project isn’t funded. The developers get 0 cents and the backers are out of a game. So while some projects may crack $10 million, little guys like Republique here lie mostly forgotten.

Republique is a game designed for iOS devices but a PC and Mac version is also in the works. It’s a cinematic third person stealth game with a twist. You control security cameras and computer systems trying to save Hope from a freaky 1984ish nightmare state.

The game includes special voice acting stars such as David Hayter. You may know him as Solid Snake. And Jennifer Hale. You may know her from Mass Effect… if you went female.

While I’m pretty sure the game will still see the light of day even if the Kickstarter fails, if this thing interests you at all, please help fund Republique.

Battle Chess Kickstarter

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

I know we’re all tired of hearing about the revival attempts being funded through Kickstarter at this point, but I want to post about this because it has me somewhat conflicted. The game is Battle Chess; if you played PC games in the 90s, you may have come across it. The Kickstarter project is headed by Subdued Software and has a target goal of $100,000.

As someone who enjoyed the original 1988 release, and can play Chinese Chess (which was the game for the sequel), I’m interested. On the other hand, as someone who’s old enough to know that the gimmick of animations whenever a piece is taken grows old extremely fast, I feel doubtful that there will be enough meaningful substance for this game to register as a serious chess game for anyone but fans of the original. The “Challenge Mode” could be good, but then again, I could just check out the Puzzle Of The Day at Chess.com.

Jane Jensen Is Kickstarting A New Studio

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

This must be the one thousandth and second Kickstarter campaign inspired by Tim Schafer & Double Fine’s big money project. Jane Jensen is another big name in the adventure games biz — namely for the Gabriel Knight series – and she’s now starting up a new game studio with her husband. They’re calling it Pinkerton Road.

The interesting bit about this Kickstarter is this thing they’re calling the CSG model – Community Supported Gaming. That means you get all the games that studio produces for that cycle. Though to get all the games for that year you need pay up for one of the higher tiers. At this stage Jensen acknowledges to start with they may only be able to produce one game.

And that game is Moebius, a “metaphysical thriller”. The idea was voted on by the initial Kickstarter backers. I myself would’ve voted for a Gray Matter 2, but this new series sounds just as promising. Jensen vows to work on more Gabriel Knight games when their studio grows.

Tim Schafer & Ron Gilbert, Al Lowe, and now Jane Jensen. It certainly is a great time to be an adventure fan.
