Mario & Sonic OWG Release Date Announced

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (or M&SatOWG I guess) has has a US and UK release date announced of October 13 and 16 respectively. Coming to Wii and DS, the release will precede the 21st Winter Games to be held in Vancouver in February 2010. No New Zealand release date announced yet, but this should merely be a formality given that the original Beijing Games title released in a narrow window worldwide.

Supporting the Wii Balance Board, the game includes events such as snowboard cross, alpine skiing, figure skating, bobsleigh and ice hockey. Multiplayer is a given, but no word on any Wi-Fi support, and also sadly no mention of MotionPlus support. Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games sold over 10 million combined Wii and DS units, so Sega and Nintendo will be banking on this ringing the tills this Christmas (only 164 sleeps left!).

Update: New Zealand release has been set for the 15th of October.

The (tri-) Force is Strong in This One

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

googletesla

Some observant or obsessive (or tipped off) reader at Go Nintendo has noticed something hidden in the Google logo redesign in celebration of Nikola Tesla’s birthday. If you look very carefully, you’ll be able to find a tiny triforce logo hidden in the image. It isn’t the first time this has happened – the triforce logo was also seen (not quite sodiscreetly) on the Google Earth Day banner.

If you are having problems seeing it, then click after the break to have all revealed, as well as see the Earth Day effort.

Can you take the “scribble” out of Scribblenauts?

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

Those of you that don’t have a DS (shame on you!) will have fingers crossed that the following statement from the technical director of the game means that this hotly anticipated title may just make it to other platforms:

VG247: Is there any chance of this ever coming to other platforms? It would work well on PC, for example.

Marius Fahlbusch: Unfortunately, I cannot comment on it at this point. But the concept would definitely work on other platforms as well and we’ve seen gamers from very different backgrounds pick it up and enjoy it equally.

Brian will be attending a preview evening soon for the game and will be able to offer us an insight into how badly you are going to want this game to be coming to a platform near you.

Carcassonne Coming to DS

Friday, July 10th, 2009

carcassonne11

Carcassonne, the medieval tile board game given away to Xbox LIVE members as part of the "LIVE is 5IVE" promotion in 2007, is on its way to the DS. It will come with the "River" expansion set, but to the disappointment of many fans there has been no mention made of any other expansion sets included, and as we know that is not something that can be later patched or added via DLC to the DS.

Multiplayer has will be available sharing a single DS console, or multi-cart link, but no mention has been made of singl-cart play or WiFi connection play. The game is due to release sometime later this year.

ButtonMasher Podcast #42

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

It doesn’t feel like it has been a week already since the last podcast, but alas, time travels at an ever increasing rate as we do more podcasts. This week we talk about the new games on consoles, iPhones and Facebook. We discuss wether Fight Night Round 4 can be classed in the same genre umbrella as fighting games such as Street Fighter and Tekken. Caution, Podcast contains a plot spoiler regarding a character in Harry Potter.

BloodBowl Now Available on PC

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

bloodbowl

BloodBowl has been in development for a while now  by Cyanide Studios and while the Xbox, PSP and DS versions are still getting more layers of paint applied to the in game figurines, the PC version has been completed, is dry and ready to play with. The price is set at $49US and is available to download from here.

Unfortunately for me the hardware requirements mean that I’ll be waiting for the Xbox version for my fix.

ButtonMasher Podcast #39

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

ADK is not explained in the episode. Or is it! A week full of the latest videogames will do strange things to a man, which would explain why Wugga and Brian sound somewhat burnt out. But there’s some content injected into the podcast via an interview with an Uncharted 2 developer, a HUGE PS3 contest, and an intro by TIM SCHAFFER!?

Rhythm Heaven Review (DS)

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Rhythm_heaven_banner

Rhythm Heaven, as the name suggests, is a rhythm based game released by Nintendo under the "Touch! Generations" branding (in PAL regions). Touch! Generations games aim to broaden their appeal to a wider audience than traditional games, and at first glance this title offers accessible and easy rhythm mini-games. However the difficulty soon ramps up far too quickly, especially for a game that is targetted at children, grandparents, and gamers alike. Despite this, the game has an unusual attraction and charm that is not easy to put into words.
