Toad – flippin’ us the bird since 1985

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

mariotoad

This is a classic and familiar screen for most gamers – you’ve just “beaten” Bowser only to be told by Toad that you’ve wasted your time. What we didn’t know was that all along Toad had been (allegedly) rubbing in the pain by giving us the middle finger!

Click after the break to see the a close-up of Toad as featured in Super Mario Bros., which reveals a side of Toad that many may not have suspected.

Can you take the “scribble” out of Scribblenauts?

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

Those of you that don’t have a DS (shame on you!) will have fingers crossed that the following statement from the technical director of the game means that this hotly anticipated title may just make it to other platforms:

VG247: Is there any chance of this ever coming to other platforms? It would work well on PC, for example.

Marius Fahlbusch: Unfortunately, I cannot comment on it at this point. But the concept would definitely work on other platforms as well and we’ve seen gamers from very different backgrounds pick it up and enjoy it equally.

Brian will be attending a preview evening soon for the game and will be able to offer us an insight into how badly you are going to want this game to be coming to a platform near you.

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

littlebigplanet-banner-2

According to UK website MCV, Little Big Planet is set for a re-release later this year. It is slated to be bundled with DLC already available on PSN, but there are no details about how much or exactly what DLC will be included. The game has already dropped to” budget pricing” here in New Zealand, and was recently sold for as low as £11 in the UK (about NZD $30). It will remain to be seen whether the additional content will be enough to shift this apparently slow moving title.

Wii Fit Plus Japanese launch details hit rumour mill

Friday, July 10th, 2009

wiifitplus

"New fitness and new fun" is rumoured to be coming to Japan later this year. They failed to mention the new ways to make yourself look stupid in front of your TV such as flapping your arms around pretending to fly.

Japanese Nintendo news website Rambling Man claims a 1 October 2009 release date for Wii Fit Plus at the bargain price of ¥2000, which equates to $21 USD or NZD $34. By the time that you factor in the "ass end of the world" tax, we could be looking at $59.99 for a chance to wipe the dust off the Balance Board at long last. Hopefully the price isn’t a reflection on the quality and quantity contained in the title, but that’s not something that would surprise any discerning Wii owner any more.

Carcassonne Coming to DS

Friday, July 10th, 2009

carcassonne11

Carcassonne, the medieval tile board game given away to Xbox LIVE members as part of the "LIVE is 5IVE" promotion in 2007, is on its way to the DS. It will come with the "River" expansion set, but to the disappointment of many fans there has been no mention made of any other expansion sets included, and as we know that is not something that can be later patched or added via DLC to the DS.

Multiplayer has will be available sharing a single DS console, or multi-cart link, but no mention has been made of singl-cart play or WiFi connection play. The game is due to release sometime later this year.

Battlefield 1943 Gets of to Rocking Shaky Start

1943

It’s not often that I purchase a multiplayer only game, the fact is that I am finding it more and more difficult to find time to play multiplayer games when other people are playing, that coupled with the fact that my son has hidden copies of some of my favourite multiplayer titles…… anyway, Battlefield 1943 was definitely something I was keen to get into with the ButtonMasher community.

The US price has been set at $7.99,  the NZ price is a spectacular $9.90, as Sidhe wish to recognise the support that they recieve from New Zealand gamers and ‘wave the flag for NZ made games’.

Worms 2: Armageddon Review (XBLA)

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

The Worms franchise would have to be the best ‘Scorched Earth’ style of games out. Dominating the other platforms for years Worms hit the ground running with the first release for the Xbox 360 and now with the second release, titled Worms 2: Armageddon, Xbox 360 owners have a bit of a choice when wanting to play this genre of game. As the title implies this is a complete rework of the original Worms: Armageddon of PC fame. But how does Worms 2: Armageddon stack up against the first Worms and Death Tank? And is it actually any good?

EA Sports Grand Slam Tennis Review (Wii)

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

grand slam banner

Grand Slam Tennis is EA Sports’ first foray into the Tennis genre, releasing first on the Wii, with PS3 and Xbox 360 versions promised for later in the year. Even before the Wii was launched, the potential for the Wii-mote to provide immersion and a deep sense of realism in a tennis game had been recognised. And while Wii Sports tennis was fun, and still is, it always left players wanting just a little more depth in gameplay given the potential of the control system. Has EA served up an ace? Or have them stumbled into an embarrassing foot fault with the first game in this new franchise?
