UFC 2009 Undisputed Review

Monday, June 15th, 2009

I am guessing that most people in our neck of the woods have only heard of UFC (the sport, not the game) in passing. It has become pretty big in the US, but here…even if you are a SKY subscriber it is still in the “pay per view” category. It has been around for quite a while though. I remember when I was at school, me and my best mate would go over to his older brother’s flat to watch his UFC videos (yes…not DVD’s).

UFC is short for the Ultimate Fighting Championship, which is the most popular of the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) federations.Fights take place in the octagon (like a boxing ring…but more octagonal). There aren’t too many rules involved. Most of the prevented strikes or strike areas are there to prevent death or very serious harm (such as strikes to the throat). The sport’s appeal comes from combining the spectacle of professional wrestling with a large number of highly technical fighters who are top-tier in their chosen fighting disciplines.Sounds like it would make a pretty good fighting game right? Well, up until now they have been pretty rubbish. But UFC 2009 Undisputed has come to save the day.

Cowon S9 Review

cowon

The MP3 player market is one that was grabbed by the balls and held with an iron grip by a single company, not because they forced their product on the world but because consumers lapped it up like some pleasure inducing drug. Some people however experience feelings of revulsion at being forced to adopt a specific program or format to use their hardware, these people are the ones that look for alternatives, Cowon is out to cater for these people by offering a sleek, sexy and very functional touch screen enabled media player.

Mafia II Impressions

mafia

There were a lot of third person games on show at E3, some were predominantly shooters, while other took a heavier platform focus. Mafia II, if it had to be classified, would probably fit into a Shooter/Epic Movie genre, it features gameplay boasting tight combat action but the underlying theme that impressed me was the characters and their interactions with each other, just like what you would want to see in an awesome Mafia movie.

Brutal Legend Preview (Hands On)

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Watched over occasionally by Tim Schafer himself, the Brutal Legend demo pods at EA’s E3 booth are proving to be quite popular, with good reason. Combining the exploration and charm of Psychonauts with a flare of rock/metal and the action of a more focused, action genre title. More »

EA Sports Active Video Review

Friday, May 29th, 2009

The gauntlet was thrown down last week to Wugga, the gauntlet of getting Active.

The challenge originally was for him to do an entire 30 day program in EA’s new  fitness game in the space of a week. The challenge was never really accepted but we didn’t have any idea of how vigorous of an exercise regime the normal program would work out to be let alone 30 days worth compacted into 7.

In the video (here) Wugga investigates the ins and outs, the sights and sounds and even the smells of EA Sports Active.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine Review

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Games based on movies suck, plain and simple. They are often so dumbed down or such a terrible interpretation of a cinematic experience that they make gamers cry bitter bitter tears of hatred. The greatest thing about X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not that it is a good game, but rather that it bucks the trend, it bucks it right in the face with titanium claws while simultaneously lifting it’s head into the furiously rotating blades of a military chopper.

The level of violence in the game (which admittedly fits with the theme of a mutant with razor-sharp claws) is far more prolific than the movie that shares the same name and instead of being a typical action/adventure game it is a brawler that hints at its developers (Raven Software) being inspired by games synonymous with the genre. The final result is something very playable, ultimately flawed, but enjoyable.
