I find some are slow and some aren't.

They are slow - coming from the state's = fail!

Ewww that sounds like knowledge would be required.

I think all they do is take the images provided from the xbox.com site (eg http://avatar.xboxlive.com/avatar/NZ...vatar-body.png ) and arrange them into another image of their own devising... so either the retrieving of the original images is slow (in which case we can't do anything), their image generation process is slow (which we COULD replicate - although making it fast isn't necessarily easy), or their hosting is slow for us to access (which we could do something about)
