Default wat is hdmi

So I went to plug my PS3 into my brother's shitty 29" CRT with the RCA cords, and it outright would not talk to it. I brought it home, tested it on a shitty old 29" CRT that it previously worked with, and it refused to talk to that as well.

I plugged it into the HDMI on my proper telly and it worked fine. Plugged it into the RCA holes and it didn't work. I tried the RCA cords from my PS2, same result.

Is the A/V port fucking out a thing that happens to PS3s? Am I doing it wrong?

Yeah, I know my brother should get a proper telly. I keep telling him that.

Cool thread title o_O Lol.
It's probably trying to output 1080 because it's not smart. Plug it in with HDMI and set the output resolution to standard definition only, then try it with the RCA

^ I tried to do that, but I couldn't figure out how. Where do I go to change the resolution?

Incidentally, last time I plugged it into low def relic, it worked fine >_<

Like emetic said, it's trying to output through the last resolution it used. You can do what emetic said and set it before you leave, but that's kind of annoying to remember.

Option 2:

When you push the power button to turn on the PS3, hold it down. After a a little while (I think around 5 seconds?) the PS3 will try to output at the lowest resolution, and ask what settings you want to use.

The whole "Hold power button to reset display-output" thing needs to be printed on a sticker covering all new PS3 disc-trays IMO.Sooo many people get caught-out by this.

Cool, I didn't know about the holding the button thing, though I had presumed one of those existed.
The resolution output thing is in the settings > video settings something or other menu.

Yep. Like a charm.

Baffled as to why it needed it this time and not last time though.

Since then my brother's gone and bought a 40" Bravia :P

I'm having some hdmi problems of my own.

Connecting to a Sony TV it seems to always cut out and go to a black screen, and then it goes back to the action only to flicker black again several seconds later.
And the problem has only gotten worse.

I've tried the PS3 with other HD TVs/monitors and it works fine.
Xbox 360 connects fine using the same hdmi cable.

Why would a Sony product be so faulty in use with another Sony??

That doesn't rule out issues with the cable.

Does this happen mid game and at random intervals, or just after you launch a game?

Oh true. How does that work?

Used to be just randomly. Now it's every several seconds, game or no game.

I had a cheap cable that had slight oxidation on the outer metal and it worked perfectly with everything other than my PS3.
