When the PS3 updates is it re-downloading everything, or what.... because mine has been downloading for 35 minutes and is only about 80% done. Urge to play....... faded.

Are you referring to firmware updates? Minor point-updates are definitely deltas because they're pretty small. But major firmware updates might be the entire code.

I thought all firmware updates were entire code? They all seem to be around the same file size.

ALWAYS download from your computer, it goes so much faster. You can then update multiple PS3s (if you have them) without downloading the firmware multiple times.

Sorry - this was more of a RAGE post then a well though out commentary. Our PS3 is our media centre, so the whole house was waiting around for 30-40 minutes while the download crawled along.

There was a system update a few weeks ago that was tiny. Can't have been firmware.

What i find annoying, the same update for a game on XBOX will take literally 5-10 seconds.. and the same patch/update on PS3 will be 60+ MB and take 3-4 minutes...


Still, pro's and cons go both ways.. definatley an annoyance however

SO. STUPID.
I've said this before, but I like to rant:

If the game has been updated, why the hell don't they update the primary code!? There is no reason ANYONE should have to install an update for a game they JUST downloaded.

It's almost as stupid as a Game of The Year edition retail game requiring all the updates that the original release had. I say 'almost' because I can understand the cost-saving aspect to simply re-pressing the Golden Master of the first edition and packaging DLC codes. This PSN situation makes NO SENSE.

Interestingly, last night I resumed the download for InFamous since I had a bunch of reserve broadband data. InFamous didn't require any updates whatsoever! Surely there have been updates to the retail game since it released, so I guess they baked them into primary code of the downloadable version.

It shows that it's possible. Perhaps it's up to the developer to decide how to deploy the updates, and it's easier/cheaper to leave the primary code alone and serve the same updates that are queued up for the retail release.

I almost did that too, figured Ratchet would be good for 'teh kiddies' of the family to play whilst visiting. But then i thought, f**k them, they can go play on the road or something and got Dead Nation instead

I think it'd be criminal to DL a full game, and then it have to go through a bunch of updates before you can play it.
