I've heard the 900 is "better" but not really better. For many people a screen that large is unwieldy and it has worse battery life. The 800 has neither of those drawbacks.

That's the exact opposite of everything I've heard about the 900. The battery life was one of the major complaints re: the 800, and so it was a priority improvement for the 900. It's actually a different kind of battery.

I'm definitely down for a bigger screen, and it doesn't seem to affect the bulk of the phone too much. Also, there's a front-facing camera and (a moot point for NZers, admittedly) 4G support.

Other than that, it's pretty much the same phone. Same processor, GPU etc.

It's the 4G support that kills battery life. If you don't use 4G then the battery life is awesome.

Have you noticed this trend: all 4G phones are large phones with large screens. The theory is that huge devices are necessary for huge batteries to power 4G. You don't find 4G in small phones because the battery life would be abysmal.

Battery use on ICS is amazing.

Im running 4.0.3 XXLPQ and getting about 1% battery drop every 3 hours.

its here, with a horrible ad none the less.

Feel its missing the "Wow" factor that the 2 had, feels more like an "s" upgrade from those apple nubs.

Yeah I'm not won over. The plastic casing of my SGS1 was horrible until my Case Mate arrived. Seems they've gone back to that same creeky, slippy design.

Lots of people seem convinced that the screen won't compete with the SLCD-2 of the HTC One X either. I'm not sure I can trade AMOLED for LCD though. Once you go black, you never go back...

Really?
Bigger screen, less frame, 309ppi pixel density, quad core 1.4 GHz Exynos CPU, video pop up, better 2100mAh battery, Bluetooth 4.0, and 64GB internal memory... sure looks pretty remarkable to me.

Oh spec-wise I'm not disappointed. I'm just not a fan of having to add a case to an already large handset. The texture on the SG3 has returned to the same feel as the SGS1, which is to say, its like holding a wet bar of soap.

The unlock screen looks annoying as hell too.

Samsung's Galaxy brand is the biggest thing in Android right now, and a big reason why they're the only phone vendor besides Apple that is making any money. If they're not careful they'll dilute their Galaxy brand by releasing too many products under the name too quickly. Galaxy SII, Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy SII all within 10 months. The best way to hurt brand loyalty is to release a better product too soon. Especially when they are products usually purchased under 12/24 month contract.

I don't think that the S3 is too soon - the S2 was out in May last year, so that's over a years difference. I do think that marketing the Nexus as a galaxy was a poor choice - it's a pure google phone, the flagship of the pure OS and doesn't have the specific Samsung overlays that make a Galaxy a Galaxy. But it wasn't an 'S' and I'd be surprised if anyone 'side-graded' from an S2 to a Nexus.

More to the point, I don't think that the phones you listed that are the issue. It's the ones like Galaxy Y or Galaxy mini. It's a crowded brand and the word 'galaxy' tells you nothing about the product. You almost want them to drop the 'galaxy' part of the name so that the lines can stand by themselves - Or just have the 'Galaxy' name for the S-range.

Anyone playing anything special these days? Still playing Oubliette and Deadly Dungeons - the only Old School Android RPGs that seem to be worth playing.
