Before you read my post understand that I went to film school, so I have been taught to be a prick about this sort of thing.
I think it looked nice, but was an overall shit story with so many holes in it I cannot bring myself to like it. The group I saw it with over a week ago is still discussing the issues with it. I do recommend that people go see it though, while I don't like the film I got more entertainment out of it post movie than I think I have any other film in the last few years. I find it unusual that a majority of the people that I know who like it are christian, yet those same people don't see the religious aspects of the film as easily as people of other religions or non-religious people. I have done a lot of research into the film since seeing it due to the large amount of questions that I have about it, and it turns out (this is not a spoiler because it is not in the film and is no longer canon to the story) that Jesus was going to be an engineer in this story and that certain motivations later in the story were due to the treatment of Jesus in his time on earth. While the shit stirring atheist in me says "HAHAHA FUCK YEAH!" to this idea, its still would have been a bit on the nose to put that in the film, but that revelation by the film makers does make all the other religious mumbo jumbo in the film feel a little more manufactured and a lot less accidental allegory. I will be interested to see the Directors Cut (supposedly 20 mins or so longer) when it comes out, but I suspect it will only be a scene that I know about already that was cut from the film to add a "OMG I DIDNT SEE THAT COMING!(only most people did)" moment further into the film and some extended scenes. I may get around to writing a list of holes(in spoiler tags!) at some point today if I need a break from editing.

I think the movie, even with its many flaws will live on as classic movie. Its extremely thought provoking, extremely well designed, and acted superbly. The film poses many questions and doesn't answer them at all, yet still leaves clues scattered through most scenes in the movie. It sticks in the mind, and once it reaches critical audience mass will remain there. And its typical of Ridley Scott to release imperfect cuts to theatre. I have faith that his director cut will solve at least some of the flaws people have been complaining about.

The more I think about this movie post-viewing, the more I like it. And I think there are lots of very vague, abstract clues littered throughout, as Jim mentioned. But there are so many and they're so vague that it does leave you a little unsatisfied :/

Some of those "clues" are literally the art department fucking around. On the big head there is literally what they call a shrine to Geiger, it has a picture of a friggin alien in it and other geiger elements on it, I saw it and thought wtf, looked it up and the explination was that it was simply to honor the old designer. It has nothing to do with the actual story so it shouldn't be there, but it is. Seriously bad story telling right there and it calls into question other "clues".

I'm starting to question why I enjoyed it, but I really really did! Maybe I experienced Tel's 'Geek Goggles' effect whereby any ugliness in a sci-fi becomes unnoticeable :P

Spoilers and nasty criticism in there. In completely unrelated news, I won't be paying to see this one at the theatre. I'm sure I'd be able to feel Scott's contempt for his audience bleeding out of every scene. |

Did you read that before seeing it? Its just riveting reading a breakdown of every single second of a film. It's as bad as that grizzly mofo with the nasally voice who "reviews" the Star Wars prequels.

Yeah, hard out. I wanted to know if the story was as bad as I'd been led to believe by the little snippets I'd read here and there.
It turns out that yes. Yes it is. Ancient aliens is a piss poor trope that angers me every time I encounter it. It's too stupid to watch with my face. |

I was picturing you rubbing your face all over a sheet of braille, which would be pretty hilarious.
I don't need to explain what braille is do I? http://lmgtfy.com/?q=braille
