Soo, I'm going to get a PS3. Ideally the 80gig model for $766 (with game)would be fantastic, but there's a shitload of promtional new, inbox, with 1 year warranty models on tardme from $400 up.
Is the 40 gig drive sufficient? Suggestions, advice? |

If you're not worried about the Warranty then buying second hand is a fine. The HDD is easily upgraded in future if you need to.

i think a year is plenty of time for the console to crap itself it is going to.
then again it could take 1 year and 1 day to die. its kind of hard to say. but 40 gb is plenty i think. Alot of Installations of old aren't nearly as noticed now. |

![]() Also, you can buy big harddrives now for much, much less than the $256 (game price $110) dollar difference for an extra 40GB of space. For that you could probably get a 250-500GB HDD upgrade ![]() |

40gb units seem to have a higher mortality rate (blu-ray drive dying). Myself and a few members here can attest to that.
I'd want total confidence in any warranty offered and I'm not sure someone who sells consoles on trademe can give me that confidence. |

The ones on trademe come with a 1 year manufacturers warranty, they're the 40 gig models that were sold cheap with new Sony LCD's.

Its still someone on trademe at the end of the day and that makes things considerably more difficult when it comes to chasing up. You are buying from an individual rather than an entity.
I've come to appreciate the bricks and mortar stores in this day and age of poor quality goods and shoddy customer service. However, I'm sure its unlikely you will have any trouble getting it serviced if Sony are standing by the seller (shame I can't say you won't need to service it at some point ) and $400 sounds like a good price. |

Are they really available for $400?
To be honest the failure rate of this generation would put me off buying any of them (well the Wii failure rate seems ok though). The only reason the 360 is worth buying is that it comes with a 3 year warranty for the RROD but it is reported that non-RRODs are still fixed anyway. If not, then I guess $150 or whatever isn't the end of the world given that you still get a chance at a free repair in the 3 years. I've heard of "just out of warranty" PS3s that noone wants to know about. I sure as hell wouldn't be happy with that if I had paid $1000 for a machine, and store knowledge and acknowledgement of the CGA is at an all time low. I don't want to have to waste my time to get my RIGHTS under law, so this puts me off buying a PS3. Funny that most people won't buy a 360 because of the well known failure rate, and yet wouldn't blink an eye if their PS3 laser died after 18 months. Right now I'd only buy a PS3 from the likes of the Warehouse or Dick Smith - I believe that NL/BB/HN have poor track records when it comes to consumer law. |

The failure rate of the PS3 is around 1-3%, the Xbox 360 is around 14-30% which is why there is a difference between people being concerned over one console more than another. |

We only read about a small number of cases of failure - others don't make it to internet forums. Hey I'm not saying it's more than 5-10%, and I'll readily accept (and grumble over) a 30%+ failure rate of the 360, but at least I know there is a good chance MS will look after it. That's not to excuse MS for making a crap console, it's just that if I'm paying $1000 for a console, I don't expect to be left with an expensive repair to do after 2 or 3 years. If retailers in NZ were more willing to provide consumers with their rights under law, PS3 purchase would for me be back to level terms and take the edge over 360. Of course I'm only talking in terms of hardware reliability/warranty issues. Nothing about games or preferred console. |

Actually according to recent data the xbox has a failure rate (new models) of around 10% and the other consoles (Wii and PS3) have a failure rate of under 1% apparently. It was around 30% for the old launch versions of the 360 though which is stupidly high.

Allright, it's not a fanboy argument I'm after here! :P
On Trademe there's plenty of new in box WITH WARRANTY RECEIPT (deal with Sony, NOT trademe seller) consoles around the $400 dollar mark reserve price, some are at reserve for much less. I certainly wont be getting one WITHOUT A WARRANTY RECEIPT. |
