Default New DS Announced: Nintendo 3DS!

"A press release on Nintendo's Japanese website appears to confirm the company's next handheld console, temporarily named the "Nintendo 3DS," and said to include hardware and software that will enable "3D effects" without the need for special glasses"

http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/23/br...re-news-at-e3/

Have to wait until E3 though to get all the goss.

Sounds very interesting, although it wasn't really an "announcement", more like a leak.
I knew the DSi would be quickly superseded, glad I didn't get one!

How is an official press release a leak. Or have I missed something.
Has potential though. Ive been wondering when we would get 3d portables. The tech has been around for a while. Just isnt feasible in large forms or with multiple angles normally.
If they can implement sensitivity based off pressure there will be quite alot of potential in that alone for games.

accidental it was an official press release.

WaxerNZ: Yeah it's ideal tech for a handhold. They are only really single player anyway, and as said in the article the tech isn't good for large screens without glasses.

I think it'll be great. I really want to know more about this 3d control stick thing though and what that is.

Oh, I first read the news on Nintendo Life:
"Coming out of a PDF hosted on Nintendo of Japan's website ... no spokesperson from Nintendo has made a comment and it seems odd that it would be announced in a PDF rather than a high-profile press conference ..."

But I see that since that post went up official comments have come out of Ninty along with further details.

Can't wait to see more details about the specs. I'd like to think it'll be more powerful than the PSP, I mean why would Nintendo release a gaming machine that's weaker than the previous generation.... right?! *cough*Wii*cough*

Yeah I went to the Nintendo Japan site and looked at their PDF's. Can't read Japanese but saw "3DS" on the second line. That was good enough for me

Feature wishlist:

#1 - Backward compatibility with DS INCLUDING ad-hoc Wi-Fi for multiplayer

Many of us will be ADDING the new DS to our setup and the ability to use the new DS as another controller/console for mutliplayer games would be awesome.

Pretty sure I read it had DS compatibility.

My wishlist would be:

1. Dual touch screen
2. 3D capabilities that rival PSP (preferably more powerful)
3. Use of the Nintendo Store
4. A hint of the online system they'll use for the Wii successor.
5. Good camera/gyroscope (it has to have one of these) implementation.
6. Include a SIM card slot for texting (I won't use this, but imagine the sales increase for the kid/teen market if this was included)

I want a DS where DSiWare/Wiiware games are attached to a profile and can be downloaded again to other consoles, a la PSN or XBLA.

+1 Mriceguy

I don't want to have to go back to my DSi to play my DSiWare, if I have a DSiWare capable 3DS. I'm hoping something can be done about this. I do know that you can tie your DSi/Wii to a nintendo account, but I don't have much faith that you can utilise that to re-retrieve your stuff on another console.

Plus, anything you purchase before you link, doesn't seem to ever show up on said list of purchases online
(then again, things do not/did not even appear properly anyway)

Considering you have to rebuy your stuff if you had a DSi and then purchase a DSi XL doesn't exactly give me hope for the future.

This guy posts a lot of news, rumours, and things about the 3DS quite often if you're interested.
