The PS3 can also do audio over HDMI at full HD.
Optical cables only have the bandwidth to carry a 5.1 bitstream or 2 channel uncompressed PCM. HDMI can do 7.1 bitstream or 7.1 full uncompressed audio. Bitstream means the amp has to decode the audio signal, PCM means the PS3 decodes it. So if you have an Amp that supports HDMI audio you can make full use of the PS3 audio. Now THAT sounds great ![]() |

No, the sound n video passes thru the HDMI amp on the one cable, which you then connect to your TV.
I'm going to look at getting a HDMI amp, real soon. |

Hmm, I'll be wanting my audio to run through my surround sound setup. What's the easiest way to do this bearing in mind my 360 already has the optical audio slot on the amp?

Don't you require an HDMI cable to connect PS3 to amp, and then (presuming it can) the amp connects via HDMI to the TV to output the picture?

I could connect the picture direct from PS3 to LCD via HDMI, and I think I'll prob get an optical audio splitter which will allow me to connect the PS3 and 360 to the one optical input on the amp. |

I thought that to get a full rez image the HDMI had to connect directly to the tv. Wasn't that the point of HDMI - making it hard to priate the image by forcing you to connect directly the TV you're viewing it on.

HDMI just needs to be connected to an HDCP compliant device. That device can be a TV, AVR (amp), or even an HDMI switch.
Practically every AVR on the market that has HDMI ports is HDCP compliant. You can choose to go with HDMI directly to the TV for video and optical to the AVR for audio. |
