Last I heard was supposed to be out in Feb this year...or April at the latest. I'd rather go for Play-TV than get a freeview decoder.

New Zealand uses a system that is used by no other country in the world other than Norway, plus Sony is locked in a legal battle with Sky TV over access to the EPG data

F**k. Sky will roadblock anything to save their crappy service. Probably means we'll never see PlayTv in NZ.

Why would Sony be in a legal battle with Sky??
PlayTV is DVB-T as is Freeview/HD. Sky is DVB-S or DVB-S2. Sky has no Digital Terrestrial service.
Freeview EPG has nothing to do with Sky, it's a totally different platform, so your comment puzzles me some what.

I am also pretty sure Sony has every chance of having a good working relationship with the Freeview people as their PR people are actually the same company.

Big problem is that PlayTV does not yet support HD.

There is discussions that this is due to the HD format freeview uses in the UK and that our FreeviewHD will be okay, but it is not clear.

What we need is a clear statement from Sony on this. Anyone with contacts and a keen sense of journalism going to do an investigation for us?

The flavour of AAC audio used here (and Norway) is unique and as such is not commonly supported in either commercial or open source software.

So convincing Sony to add support for this (currently) rare codec is a major barrier to getting this done. If it is to be intergrated into the system software, then it has to be rolled out globally.
Hardly what Sony would consider a priority.

The other barrier is Freeview requires that HD only passes on the HDMI path and any other interconnect downscales the signal. Sony aren't doing this in the UK as they are happy to let Component pass HD resolutions with PlayTV there.
They could tell Freeview to piss off, or demand an exception to the rule.

So PlayTV is basically a free to air HD-TV source.
With being able to record to HDD via PS3?

Like say My Sky HD without the Sky?

Sounds pretty choice,.
