Default Should I get a PSP?

My birthday's coming up and I'm not really sure what to get. Then I realised I have no portable media player, and that PSP started to look rather appealing.

Few questions:
  • Is it worth getting a 'freed'/able to be 'freed' model? I wouldn't really be getting games, rather the extras like custom themes and whatnot
  • What's the story about the interlacing on the 3000 model?
  • Are a lot of games able to be downloaded from the store to the harddrive (don't really want lots of UMDs)
  • What movie formats does it allow on the card straight out of the box
  • How well does remote play work?
  • Should I look at something else instead?

yeah just for now.
basically i got better stuff to be doing lol.
first few weeks. buying/building shit.
will be sweet soon.

Anyway done some prodding as such.
PSP's are pretty cool, got some neat features and play well.
There is a new PSP coming soon with analogue sticks plus a twice as bigger screen.

If i do get one. it will be that,
but before that i needa get a 360 back. hah

I'd so buy that, my current PSP has a dink in the screen due to my sisters retardation. Also that solves my only quams about the control scheme too. The only problem will be the price point, hopefully it isn't too expensive.

Hmmm, I don't really want to get one if the next is right around the corner, but all news of the PSP2 seems to be rumours and such, so I'll probably just get a PSP now.

Last question, second hand 2000 (my friend has one that's been freed) or a brand spanking new 3000? Only reason I wouldn't want the 3000 is the 'scan-line' issue, though it's apparently been inflated by the media

Yes. You say you wouldn't 'free' it for games (read no piracy) but there's so much more than that in the 'homebrew' scene. For example, iR Shell's multi-tasking (play a game and read a walkthrough, listen to music etc), CXMB, Hold+, Book reader, Emulators, ...
  • What's the story about the interlacing on the 3000 model?
I haven't used a 3k. Best to see for yourself because you might want the new features and not notice/mind the interlacing.
  • Are a lot of games able to be downloaded from the store to the harddrive (don't really want lots of UMDs)
[link] I think Sony's working on adding more. Apart from the exclusive titles, ripping your own UMDs better option IMO because you don't want to carry them around everywhere. Of course then you're going into territory Sony doesn't support, even though you're not stealing.

I freed my PSp 1000 (got it when it first came out) and it was great for a while but fiddling with the homebrew stuff is a mega pain in the ass and you can't play the new games until they come up with new firmware cracks for the new PSP ware needed to play the game. I also noticed that most games lag due to the emulation of the higher firmwares which sucks and you also miss out on a lot of features too as a result of having a lower firmware. The homebrew games were neat but pretty average and the themes were semi-decent but eventually I just upgraded my firmware and I can't say I miss it >.>.

Yeah, I'm pretty convinced with the 3000 now, just got to check that scanline thing and I'll grab it The colours looks kickass

Apparently the new ones wont have a UMD drive so the battery will last way longer.

If you are getting it just as a meadia player I would get something else, my gf uses her psp heaps but she swears most mornings when she realises that she used it the day before so it needs a charge

Yeah, but we have no idea when the new model will come, and E3 is after my birthday (April 21st) and so I'm out of luck

I will be using this for games aswell though
