Default Best Apocalyptic Movies

Just wanting peoples thoughts on what they consider the best apocalyptic movies.

Dawn of the Dead (2006) and 28 Days Later were both good and Blindness was on the verge of being brilliant.

I, Am Legend was a big disappointment and Doomsday was utter tripe.

Thoughts?

I really enjoyed Shawn of the Dead but as far as an apocalyptic movie goes it was pretty tame. I was thinking more about movies that really installed that feeling of dread and hopelessness.

30 Days of Night came close when they were hiding out inside an attic.

28 Days was rad, the follow up sucked.

I remember seeing a film when i was a kid called Threads, about what would happen in England in the event of a total nuclear armageddon. Was really disturbing.

Damnation Alley was another quality armageddon/doomsday film (although a bit dated now).

Dawn of the Dead is great, but nothing beats the original.

Heh, i remember seeing a doco about how Tom Savini did all the effects in the oroginal film. Theres a couple of parts where dudes get ripped open, intestines and entrails all over the show. They actually used sheep guts a lot of time, and often it had been around so long it was going off and rotting, so a large poprtion of the reactions and expressions on peoples faces are them genuinely recoiling at the stench.

Cool huh?

The original DOTD was great at the time but it has not aged well. I certainly think it was a fluke given what Mr Romero released post DOTD (Day of the dead 5.5/10, City of the Living Dead 5/10, Diary of the Dead (4/10)). The remake of DOTD had one of the best openings to a horror movie ever and it was a pitty they could not maintain that level of intensity. Oh yes, the fake shopping mall did look like a cheap knock off of a disney theme park.

Watch Blindness. Its sickening. Other recommended titles would have to include:
- Children of Men
- Schlinder's List (best WWII pic ever!)

I watched the Dawn of the Dead remake when it came out at cinemas and have the DVD, I think it's totally awesome sauce.

I only just got my hands on the original this year and yeah I kinda agree with the above poster. It was probably good at the time but in this day and age it's pretty crap especially when compared to it's remake.

I am a massive fan of post-apocalyptic and dystrophic movies. Dystopian films being ones where our current way of life ends with a wimper, rather then a bang. Often just as bleak, but more worrying because some of them seem like they could happen.

So, for starters:

Apocalyptic
Right at your Door – Chemical attack in the US. Best to go in without reading up on it.
Children of Men – What happens when people can no longer reproduce?
Fortress - More dystrophic then Apocalyptic. The 80s ruled.
Code 46 - Also more dystrophic then Apocalyptic. If insurance companies ever rule our world
Gattaca - What if doctors try to run the world? Again more dystrophic then Apocalyptic
The Time Machine - Fairly brielf shows how we do ourselves in, and I like the remake.
Jericho - The TV series.
Jeremiah - Tv series. where most of the adult population has been wiped out by a deadly virus.
Every Zombie Movie: ??? of the Dead, 28 ??? Later, etc al. On that note, 28 hours later is coming out this year.
Strange Days - Can't really explain it, but a good watch.
Idiocracy - Lame humour, yet you can see it happening.
WarGames - Okay, so they avoid it. Still, so awesome.

Post-apocalyptic
12 Monkeys - A Post-apocalyptic movie that manages to be apocalyptic as well
Equilibrium - Gun-kata FTW
Mad Max - I mean, obvious.
A Boy and His Dog - Really, really old. But interesting to see some of what inspired Fallout. Raiders, murders, rape and 50s-esc folk living under the ground.
V for Vendetta - My wife's favorate movie, although YMMV
Æon Flux - Didn't think it was that bad.
Escape from L.A. / Escape from New York - Mmmmmm. Cheese.
Demolition Man - Well, I thought it was funny
Water World - Max Max with boats?
Tank Girl - Yeeech.
