I really should've got one sooner.

So where's the cheapest place to get one of these puppies?

Online or brick and mortar?

Probably Dick Smith or some computer store would have the cheapest. Online maybe Trade Me.

Can I trust Trade Me? Some of their prices seem too good to be true.

TradeMe.

I picked up a 15 metre HD Vision cable for the PS3-to-Projector, and it's awesome. Was like $115 delivered, so if you need shorter, it will be considerably cheaper.

Was this trader;

too good to be true isn't always a good rule of thumb to follow heh. keep in mind that the connectors are worth like $4 each and the cable in between is really nothing special, so don't go paying over $100 for a 2m cable.

^This...?
I'm purchasing a new 42"Plasma+Cabinet from Harvey's tomorrow and have talked them into throwing in a cable with the deal but don't want to be jibbed with a stink cable (if there is such a thing).
I'm thinking a wire's a wire right?..and the only quality disparities would be in the insulating fibres/coatings that wrap said wires right?
...such a tech-n00b

Well it doesn't matter at all for HDMI connectors unles you're using a high end HDMI amp and it's over distances greater than like 3-5 meters. Anything shorter than that and it's an epic waste of cash. The higher end ones are more expensive because they increase the cladding/insulation around the outside of the wire making it less prone to distortion from outside factors. They also add gold plated connectors in the real top end ones so you have the least resistance possible, similar to how you use silver cables in high end audio systems. You won't notice any difference at all unless you're running a very expensive system with high output speakers/tv etc and even then it only makes a tiny difference.

I have some generic $10 HDMI cables (1.5m) that have seemed to work fine on my 360, an upscaling DVD player and a set top box. But the same cables do not work properly when connected to my HD DVD player or my PS3 when playing blu-ray at 1080 and with 7.1 lossless. I have since changed the cables on these two devices to better HDMI cables and no longer have any issues. So I think there are differences but only when it comes to reliability.

That could also be due to the version of the cable (yeah, there are different versions of the same cable)
Only the newer versions (1.3 I think) added in the 7.1 and other digital formats. This might explain why it wouldn't work on your PS3 / amp.
I've got generic cheap HDMI cables off Trademe for less than $20 delivered. Never had any issues with them at all. Was running a PS3, Xbox360, HD-DVD and Amp to my LCD.

dst, that'd be Jaycar Electronics - reasonably onto it dudes in there.

I'm pretty sure that 1.3b is the latest HDMI cable format.

News, what length optical do you need?
