Default ModNation Racers

Due out in 12 days.

Now, I couldn't help but notice that my feelings on the game don't seem to be echoed by some other reviews (ie the ones giving it 9's out of 10)

Did I miss the point?

I just thought it was a cut and paste version of LittleBig but for the racing genre (and without the novelty factor or simplistically addictive gameplay)

The thing that killed the beta for me was the load times, and I've heard they're still bad in the game. Frames rate was quite variable, and I didn't quite feel the power ups either. The track creator was pretty cool though, but some of the features (such as the shortcut tool) just didn't quite work out.

Regarding the customisable content though, I think you did miss the point. It's just acting as an online avatar, it wouldn't quite be fair to have an item that gives you +5 speed or whatever, and evenutally everyone would look the same.

I loved the beta. Making stuff was easy, easier than any other game that allows creation to any degree from memory. Also, I dunno why you didn't like the racing Brian, but I spent hours on the beta just doing time trials if I didn't have mates on to race.

I was really looking forward to this based on many reviews I have seen...until it was announced that LBP2 is being released this year!

LBP2 is sounding incredible!

I've never understood the interest in customizable avatars so perhaps this is why.

Yes, at least in an action RPG your flaming sword and sexy new armour have an impact.

I did enjoy the beta for a couple of races, but was left with that 'anything else?' feeling, for all the effort it seems very forgettable.

Strangely I agree with Brian, its normally the opposite with his views when he reviews PS3 exclusives but thats because I am a sony fanboy.

What did people think of LBP customisation then? I guess people get to see your character a lot more though, instead of racing past and simply trying to blow you up

LBP customisation is brilliant and is really only limited by the skill of the operator. My kids especially spend ages customising their Sack person, their box and the levels they create. The only negative comments I have for LBP are:

- The cost of DLC is rather high given what you're getting.
- Costume DLC should be interchangeable between PS3 and PSP versions.
- Need better search and filter systems for the huge number of custom levels that now exist!

Fixed

Can't think of the last PS3 exclusive that I reviewed that I flat out didn't like. Oh wait, I can, it was Lair.

ModNation Racers has some pretty impressive customisation features though, both on the Mods and the Cars.

MediaMolecule also added some special symbols that filtered your search results, so you might want to look them up

Some of these spotlight videos are pretty neat (kind of old now), of course they're focused on the creation aspect of the game.

Oh and here's the KB one from the podcast
