There is an even longer version too. The guy at the end says (or mouths) something that I can't quite make out, but if I had to guess, its probably the same 'Tight' as the Sony ad.

Whoa
![]() Excuse my ignorance, but did the PS3 commercial ever broadcast here? If so, then I guess TV3 could use a "parody" defence. If not, then,... wow... Mriceguy, you should chase up TV3's marketing manager for comment ![]() |

Are tv3's ads designed in-house or do they contract dudes to design their ads for them? Perhaps Dai Henwood designed this ad. He's pretty weak.
Oh, I see there's an admin poast about this... but wow, that's a big call saying in such clear words that TV3 are ripping SOny off, isn't it? Normally one would say "there are strong similarities," or, "it has been said that tv3's is a shameless ripoff". But yeah, after seeing the tv3 ad, yeah... mega fail. If this existed as a meme prior to TV3 or Sony using it, was the guitar thing at the end included?

Have you seen the documentary "Outfoxed"? It's a critical look at the Fox News Network in the US. One of the key criticisms of Fox News is that its reporters constantly use the phrase "some might say that" or "it has been said that" as a means of pushing their own agenda when interviewing.Aaaaanywho, while I'm suspicious that this is indeed a rip-off myself, it could be considered a parody if the Sony version broadcasts here. I don't watch a lot of TV myself, so I'm usually rather ignorant of what the current crop of commercials includes. There could really be something in this, but I just think it needs a bit more investigation before complete condemnation. Comment from TV3/Mediaworks or even Sony is pretty much all the piece needs at this juncture! |

i had never seen the ads before but i thought it might just be the comment about the montage
but WOW! that is word for word (kind of) and shot for shot. i really wanna know how this one is gonna play out wouldnt be surprised if it was dai henwood that brought the idea up as most people that green light the tv3 in house commercials are non gamers or have little knowledge about overseas commercials The Kevin Butler commercials were never played in New Zealand that i can remember Good Spotting MrIceGuy by the way.. 2 gold stars for you |

This is a lazily executed creative decision that shouldn't have got past the 'spit-ballin by the watercooler' stage.
Whether Sony's ad was broadcast in the US, or exclusively online, I have no idea. I don't even care. TV3's promo is designed to - A: Inform viewers about Monday night. B: Sell advertising slots on Monday night. This promo will bring TV3 money. It is not acceptable for them to piggyback off the creativity of a bigger entity (Sony), with deeper pockets. Sony paid big big money for the development of the Kevin Butler character. Sony at the end of the day might not give a flying fig that a pissy little network in NZ are stretching creative license beyond breaking point, but that doesn't change the fact that the promo, as a whole doesn't just borrow parts, it follows the formular and structure almost verbatim. If (as a video editor) I was asked to cut this piece together, I'd be having some seriously strong words to say to the creative director. This is almost certainly an inhouse promo, both conception and execution. Its most probably at the demand of a non-creative who doesn't know any better. No 3rd party agency would do this, not unless they want to go out of business and quickly. Its also entirely possible that Dai Henwood hasn't even seen the KB character let alone the ad in question.
