I'm the kind of person who hates cases because they make Apple's great looking devices look stupid and they add bulk and weight. I'd rather forego protection in order to use the device as it was designed.
The Smart Cover is great in that it works really well with the built in magnets on the iPad, and is useful for standing up in different orientations and giving you a protected surface to lay it down on. It's also easy to put on and remove, which can't be said about a lot of cases. My wife has what I believe is the best case setup (I'm biased because I bought them for her). Smart Cover which is on most of the time and padded zip-up sleeve to keep the iPad (with Smart Cover still on) inside of when it's in her bag or being transported around. The sleeve keeps her headphones and a USB cable for charging inside as well. I reckon that's the best setup because I don't see any point in having a huge full-body case on the thing 24/7 for protecting it when it's in your bag. Might as well have a sleeve to put it in when you want to protect it in bags, and leave it with just the Smart Cover (or no cover) the rest of the time. My 2c P.S: Also, there is no way in the world anyone should ever use a screen protector on any iOS devices (strong opinion).

She picked an orange Smart Cover, and the zip case is this one:
 but in a knitted style. There are 3rd party knock-off Smart Covers which are way cheaper than Apple's ones, so maybe look at getting one of those instead. If they're the same quality then get the cheaper deal.
