It was a solid average movie — a strong formula executed fairly well.
But the film is very far from what you imagine when being described the premise. All I could think of was how much potential was wasted. Teen movie for sure. |

I just don't get all the Hulabaloo for this movie. The poster says everything:
Teenage Protagonist, challenge, danger, something to do with bows and arrows. She probably makes half a dozen shots in the movie, the last one being a game changer. Most likely to close a story arc with main Antagonist, there will also be some emotional investment and a tough decision to make. Dig out Battle Royale instead. |

To be fair, Prometheus' trailer is a call back to the original Alien trailer, music and all
![]() I drew similar comparisons between Battle Royale and The Hunger Games. However, The Hunger Games is a much better movie in my opinion. I think you get more emotionally invested in the narrative of The Hunger Game than Battle Royale because The Hunger Games has more depth to the "game", and more consequences/back story. Battle Royale was interesting in different ways with the randomness it created, but the characters are so much worse, and plot points that made me laugh. I don't know, I was excited to see it after hearing the premise, but it just fell short of everything. Hunger Games falls short in that it could have been more mature, but then again, target markets and all that. It was a solid film in every aspect though, which I can't say for Battle Royale. |

You're right Fadge; it's the totally hipster thing to do to call attention to Battle Royale because it's an obscure movie from over a decade ago because there's some similarity.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Battle Royale, but it's not worth over-romanticising just because it's from a foreign land. Hunger Games paints a pretty fascinating dystopian future, with considerable and worthwhile build up prior to the titular games (or what the BR detractors would refer to as "kids killing each other".) It's got some things that don't quite add up, but from what I gather it's as much a problem with the book that spawned it as the movie. I liked it.

I have to say that after watching BR I dont get the hype. I think it has been over-romanticised due to it being Japanese and all. I do have little tolerance for the Japanese style kitsch over acting
I would certainly have appreciated Hunger Games being a little more mature in its content. Maybe in a few years it will be redone a la Girl With The Dragon Tattoo All this talk of bleak futures keeps reminding me of the Travellers series by Jack Lasenby. I loved that shit when I was a kid |

The obvious ones aside, I'd like to know how the book explains Lenny Kravits. How come one of the most flamboyant fashion icons of the music industry was the most
I went in to it thinking it was 'The next Twilight' but was pleasantly surprised.
