Default Beer Money...

Well I'm officially stacking shelves at The Warehouse a couple of nights a week to make some extra beer tokens.

Slight fail to my plan though, they have given me Friday and Saturday night shifts....

Lucky I generally give it a nudge after Fire Training on Wednesday night....

And I still keep days free to turn out on the Fire Truck (We really struggle with numbers during the day) and spend time with the young fella.

Good work dude, more power to ya! Nothing wrong with stacking shelves (or flippin' burgers, pumping gas).

Yeah, damn straight! We are lucky enough that the wife is on a good wicket so I really can find work to suit my lifestyle...

I'm in the same boat; no way i'd be able to afford to study if the wife wasn't covering the mortgage in the meantime. I'm not expecting to walk out of this course straight into a well paying job either; going to have to start at the bottom all over again, just in an industry i'm actually interested in.

How many of the guys at your station are paid? How many volunteers? I suppose most of the volunteers would have day jobs, hence why many are only available at night? Puts you in a good position i suppose, to at least stay involved.

Is it something you'd consider doing full-time, at some stage? If circumstances allowed?

We are all Volunteers (busiest Volly station in the country!) and because Rolleston is so close to Christchurch 95% of the guys head into town for work leaving only a few of us to cover the days.

It's a real funny mindset being so involved in a good cause that doesn't pay a cent. I'd never go paid staff because that mindset changes completely. I also look after the Fire Safety education at all the local schools and kindys, really satisfying!

Wow, what an awesome attitude! So you'd get to see quite a bit of action being one of the few guys on during the day?

I guess once something becomes work, well, it's work. Kinda like why i stopped playing guitar in bands; once we were out Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights doing covers gigs rather than writing and playing our own songs, it just stopped being fun for me. Last straw was agreeing to do a Metallica tribute gig - i was outta there!! I like Metallica, but want to do my own music. Wanted anyway; i'm far too lazy these days!!

I understand the last serious band i was in has essentially got nowhere, and has recently agreed to do an Ozzy Osborne tribute gig *sigh*
